A plausible mistake here is to answer as if the problem is a knowledge gap — recommending another lecture or more reading. That misreads the situation: the student has rote and understanding but the deficiency is in the psychomotor domain, where explanations do not directly build skill.

The better decision is the demonstration-performance method: explain the maneuver, demonstrate it with the performance standards visible, let the student imitate with immediate feedback, and critique against the standard. This matters because a student who knows the error and its cause can self-correct in the air — the essence of moving from rote instruction toward correlation. Teaching risk management: the shift from deciding to coaching the decision

CFI-level risk management content is about building the student's own decision-making. Compare the instructor who makes the safe call with the instructor who teaches a named framework — such as the PAVE checklist or the 5P check — so the student performs the assessment.

Scenario: during a cross-country lesson, weather ahead is deteriorating and your student continues on course without comment.
