The scenario: a student planning a summer departure from a high-elevation airport asks why the takeoff roll is longer. A weak answer states 'your airplane will perform worse' and points at the performance table. That answer is factually correct but fails as instruction — the student cannot transfer it to a colder day, a heavier load, or a different field elevation, and cannot connect the table entry to any underlying physics. The mistake to recognize here is treating a chart lookup as the whole lesson.

The better decision is to teach the chain: warmer air and higher field elevation both lower air density; thinner air means fewer air molecules, so the wings generate less lift at a given indicated airspeed and the engine produces less power. Fewer available molecules force a longer ground roll and slower climb. Tie each link back to the handbook numbers so the student sees the chart as the summary of a cause, not a rule to memorize. This is exactly the rote-versus-correlation distinction from the FOI block, applied to aerodynamics and performance — which is why the two syllabus areas reward being studied together.

Scenario 2: Reading Airspace Answers Off the Sectional, Not Out of Context

Airspace and weather answers must carry their conditions with them. This scenario shows why an answer like 'Class E starts at 700 feet AGL' is incomplete, and how to teach the chart-reading skill instead.

The scenario: a student scanning a sectional asks where Class E begins. A weak answer states '700 feet AGL' as a universal fact. The correct teaching move is to show the two cases on the chart itself: the faded magenta shading marks Class E from 700 feet AGL, while the sharp magenta line with 'SFC' marks Class E reaching the surface, typically around an airport with instrument procedures. The general answer is conditional; the chart tells the student which condition applies where they are flying.

The better decision is to make the chart, not the memorized number, the source of the answer, and to have the student shade two example airports in different colors during the lesson. Then attach the operating context: the VFR weather minimums that apply depend on the airspace class and altitude, so the airspace answer and the weather-minimums answer are one connected lesson, not two separate memory items. This trains the habit that every airspace statement ends with 'in this class, at this altitude, in these conditions' — the condition-attachment habit that separates instructor-level answers from pilot-level recall.

Studying Regulations with a Citation-and-Paraphrase Habit

For each regulation you study, record the citation, a one-sentence paraphrase, and the teaching hook. Trace rules to the current eCFR text so your answer, your citation, and your explanation always agree.

Build a regulation notebook with three columns: citation, paraphrase, teaching hook. Take §61.217 as the model row — citation, 'recent experience within the past 24 months,' hook: 'what lets me endorse a student today.' Repeat the pattern for the operating rules an AGI must teach confidently, such as the VFR fuel reserve rule in Part 91, where the day and night figures differ.
