Trace one example: an instructor explains torque effect using abstract 'counterforces' language, and the student nods but cannot explain it back. The failure is overuse of abstractions combined with a lack of common experience, not a defense mechanism. Keep the two diagnostic questions separated in your notes.
The learning process: levels of learning versus domains of learning
Levels and domains are two different axes that are easy to collapse into one list. Levels describe how deeply one item of knowledge is known; domains describe categories of learning outcomes.
Levels of learning form a sequence: rote, understanding, application, and correlation. Ask which level when a student can recite the weight-and-balance formula (rote), explain why it works (understanding), solve a real problem with it (application), and connect it to a different context such as a forward-loading scenario in another aircraft (correlation). Domains of learning answer a different question: what kind of outcome is this lesson producing? Cognitive domain outcomes are knowledge and thinking, affective domain outcomes are attitudes, values, and beliefs, and psychomotor domain outcomes are physical skills. Run a sorting drill: 'the student commits to always verifying fuel calculations' is affective; 'the student computes a crosswind component' is cognitive; 'the student performs a smooth control check' is psychomotor. Also place the laws of learning (readiness, exercise, effect, primacy, intensity, recency) in their own family, cued by which single principle each describes, so three frameworks never blur into one list.
The teaching process: matching the teaching method to the lesson and the student
Learn the teaching process as steps (preparation, presentation, application, review) and the teaching methods as separate choices. Method selection is where a memorized list stops helping and scenario judgment begins.
Worked scenario: a student is stuck on cross-country flight planning, repeatedly making the same wind-correction errors despite a third full lecture. The plausible mistake is delivering a fourth lecture, on the theory that more explanation will fix it. The better decision is to switch to a demonstration-performance approach: the instructor demonstrates one complete leg on a plotting board, the student performs the next leg with coaching, and the student then applies the skill alone while the instructor reviews. The reason it matters is that the deficiency is not explanation; it is unpracticed application, and only a method with an application step addresses that.
Ground your method choices in the FAA's framework rather than in habit. For each method, note its characteristic strength and its characteristic demand on the student, then check your choice against the lesson objective. Also learn how a lesson plan fits the process: a lesson plan is the written roadmap that organizes content and time, while the method is how the content is delivered. Confusing the written plan with the delivery technique is a definitional error worth preventing early, so label every practice lesson description as plan plus method before you judge whether the method itself was right.

Assessment and critique: choosing the right critique and asking answerable questions

Worked scenario: after a student presents a weight-and-balance solution to the class, the instructor opens with a rapid list of every error, including two minor rounding choices, and moves on. The plausible mistake is assuming thoroughness equals helpfulness; this is an authoritative critique, delivered with no student input and no prioritization. The better decision is a collaborative critique: ask the student to self-assess first, identify strengths, focus on the one or two errors that matter most, and agree on what to fix next. The reason it matters is that the purpose of critique is improving both the performance and the student's own judgment, not cataloging faults.
On oral questioning, learn the characteristics of a good question (it has a specific purpose, is clear and brief, applies to the subject, is suited to the student's level, and demands more than yes or no) and the named types to avoid, each with a cue: an oversize question is too broad to answer specifically; a bait question lures toward a wrong answer to catch the student out; a leading question suggests its own answer; a tilt question hides irrelevant clues; a reverse question shifts the burden back without purpose. Drill by writing one good question on crosswind computations, then rewriting it as each defective type so the cues become concrete.
Instructor responsibilities and what a Basic Ground Instructor certificate actually permits
Ground instructor certification and privileges sit in 14 CFR Part 61, Subpart I. Know the distinction between basic and advanced privileges, and that recent experience requirements apply before exercising the certificate.

Keep the definition sharp: a teaching method is the overall approach (lecture, guided discussion, demonstration-performance), while instructional aids and training technologies are the supporting tools, such as charts, models, projected presentations, video, or computer-based materials. Aids clarify, emphasize, and increase retention, but choosing an aid is not choosing a method; the same guided discussion might use a whiteboard, a model, or a projected chart. Note the FAA's caution that aids supplement rather than replace the instructor, and practice labeling lesson descriptions as 'method plus aid' pairs.
Practical exercise with a self-check rubric: take twenty index cards covering four concept families (defense mechanisms, communication barriers, teaching methods, critique styles and defective question types). Shuffle, read each card, and aloud state the discriminating cue and one example. Rubric observations: first pass, expect several hesitations and some family crossings; the exercise is working when you can name a card's concept within a few seconds and give a correct one-sentence cue for at least about three-quarters of the deck, then near all of it after a second pass. Adaptable preparation sequence: week one, build the concept-pair notes from the six topic areas; week two, work one written teaching scenario and one critique scenario per area, writing your decision and reasoning; week three, run the card-sorting exercise twice and review Part 61 Subpart I; final days, take practice questions under time and re-drill only the families where hesitations remain.
